Type of Farm

A small beef holding consisting of 24 acres with modern housing facilities for livestock. Most of the land is permanent grassland. There are several outhouses that can be adapted into workshops to expand activities available.  A new cut flower business has recently been set up in the new polytunnel.  Its aim is to produce home grown, chemical free flowers for the local market and is also producing hanging baskets and floral pots for sale.

This farm has been farmed by the Magennis family for over three generations. It started life as a small mixed farming enterprise before concentrating on dairy farming and finally progressing into beef farming. It is now turning full circle and gradually becoming a small mixed farming enterprise again with additional horticultural facilities.

About Us

Jacqui is fifty years old and married a farmer twenty years ago and developed a love of the outside and working with the soil. Jacqui and her husband Eddie adopted two boys after fostering them for a year over 16 years ago and are so proud of how they have overcome so many difficulties to become strong, independent adults. Jacqui changed career from banking to Horticulture and completed a foundation degree in Greenmount. She teaches horticulture in Southern Regional College but over the years has extended her teaching remit to include Countryside and Environment and some Agriculture.

Eddie is a qualified mechanic and works full-time off farm. He runs the beef farm in the evenings and weekends. He is the third generation to run the farm and is passionate about caring for his livestock and land management. He is very interested in Social Farming because he has heard from others within the community how it benefits people with mental health issues.

Social Farming

Jacqui has worked extensively with young people, many of whom have had learning needs or mental and social barriers to employment. She has delivered both practical and theory qualifications in Special Needs schools and within the community to older people with a love for working outside and in need of the therapy practical horticulture/farming/countryside and environment skills offer. She has worked with The Prince’s Trust helping mixed age groups see the advantages of working with the land, help them gain qualifications to change career and overcome barriers to learning to gain their qualifications. Jacqui has also spent many years working with community groups to promote Growing Your Own in community allotments, working across the communities and empowering people of all ages and abilities to build better communities whilst improving their local environment.

Jacqui believes strongly that working within nature promotes mental well-being as well as providing important life skills like being able to produce vegetables and jam with minimum environmental impact.
